Running Accomplishments:

I wasn't a big fan of running during my first two decades of life unless I was chasing a ball, puck, frizbee, etc. I started running at the end of 2008 after serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Uruguay for two years. Here is a list of my race results to date:

- Provo Canyon Half Marathon 2009: 1:29:41 (49th overall)

- Utah Valley Marathon 2011: 3:14:03 (85th overall)

- Bigfoot 50K(Midway, UT) Snowshoe Race 2012: 6:33:39 (1st overall)

- Thanksgiving Point Half Marathon 2012: 1:25:06 (9th overall)

- Dances with Dirt 50 miler (Hell, MI): DNF after 43 miles (IT band issue)

- Freedom 4 Miler (Lewis Center, OH) 2013: 23:09 (8th overall)

- Worthington Industries 5K 2013: 17:18 (1st overall)

- Columbus Turkey Trot 2013: 28:47 (23rd overall)

- Orange Out the Door 5K 2014: 16:43 (6th overall)

- Capital City Half Marathon 2014 (Columbus): 1:19:53 (20ish overall)

- Deseret News Classic Marathon 2015 (Salt Lake City): 2:56:12 (6th overall)

- New Haven 5K Road Race 2016: 16:29 (12th overall)

- Boston Marathon 2016: 3:17:14 (I totally melted and walked a bunch the last few miles)

- Utah Valley Marathon 2016 (Provo, UT): 2:58:56 (19th overall)

- Harvard Running Club Indoor Invitational (1 mile): 4:44

- Boston Marathon 2017: 2:49:36

Number of miles run:

- 2011: 927

- 2012: 1,142 (I didn't run from mid-September through the end of the year due to injury--IT band)

- 2013: 1,408 (I didn't run from January through March due to IT band issues)

- 2014: 2,014

- 2015: 1,705

- 2016: 2,049

Short-Term Running Goals:

1 mile: 4:40

5K: 16:00

1/2 Marathon: 1:17:00

Marathon: 2:45:00

Long-Term Running Goals:

Stay healthy, no injuries!

6.5 outside and 8.5 on the treadmill. I did laundry at 5:30 am so I came back early to switch it to the dryer. The treadmill miles were solely for the purpose of trying to run in warmer temps to help my body adjust if Boston is going to be warm.

Temps in the mid 70's, direct sunlight, and a bit of a tail wind. I wore my heart rate monitor because I doubted my ability to judge my effort without it. I don't think I did a single training run in temps warmer than 55 degrees. Monitoring my heart rate periodically seemed to really help me. I'm totally thrilled with the outcome, especially on a warm day. My halfway split was 1:24:57. I ran pretty even pace and finished with a slightly faster second half.

It was a blast to see so many friends along the course. I don't feel like I could have gone any faster. The sun took everything out of me. I took liquids at every mile except for mile 25. After finishing I got an awesome massage and walked home along the Charles River. It was a beautiful day for spectating. I can go up and down stairs just fine and actually feel pretty good. No injuries or joint soreness, just some sore muscles.

I did well with nutrition before the race, eating pancakes, bagels, a cliff bar, banana, etc. I must have had 2K calories before the gun went off.

Boston is a great race!

My legs are still pretty hammered from Monday, but I decided to participate in the HBS 5K.  I did just under a mile warm up (probably slower than 9 minute pace) wondering how in the world I was going to run fast for 5K.  My legs, particularly my quads, need a lot more recovery from the marathon.  Well, it ended up better than expected.  Will could have probably gone a bit faster, but we ran together for the race and led for the last 2 miles.  The next guy was maybe 10-15 seconds behind us.  After the race, I did a 2.5 mile cool down with Will and Tommy.  Great day for running (temps in the low 50's)...too bad we couldn't have traded weather with Monday.
